Encouraging small cars for private vehicles

Published on:

While the odd-even system will be effective from today in Delhi, the Centre and various State Governments must do their bit and take every possible step to discourage the use of cars, especially big cars, because these occupy more space on roads and parking areas. Only smaller cars should be purchased Union and State Governments for the use of Ministers, bureaucrats and judges, including those of the Supreme Court and the High Courts. The use of Government vehicles for non-official purposes and family members of entitled ones should be strictly restricted by making it a criminal offence.

Government officers, including senior ones, should adopt the system of car pooling. Exemptions should be made only for the President, Vice President, Prime Minister, Governors and Chief Ministers of States. To discourage the sale of cars, all types of car loans should be strictly banned. One-time toll tax should be collected like the present one-time road tax — both of which be higher for bigger cars.
