Sir — This refers to the article, “Sanskrit: A language that refuses to die” (April 6) by Rajesh Singh. The link between Sanskrit and Hindu religiosity cannot be ignored. I hail from Tamil Nadu and I agree that there was always a half-hearted attempt on the part of my family to encourage me to take Sanskrit as a subject, when I was in school. The schools too were reluctant to accord a respectable status to the subject or its teacher. The Sanskrit pandit was regarded with ridicule.
