Empty promises

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Enforcing accountability” (February 25). The Election Commission of India has rightly stepped in to ensure that political parties do not promise the moon to the electorate.

So far, the Congress had been the only main party which used to make unrealistic promises to the people, that would cause a fissure among different communities if the assurances were implemented. Besides, these promises were also unconstitutional. But of late the Aam Aadmi Party has broken the Congress’s monopoly in giving outrageous assurances.

Its decision to write off 50 per cent of the electricity bills of defaulters who did not pay their dues during the agitation is completely flawed. Moreover, the AAP regime had not even made provisions for the concession in the Vote on Account. It could not even bring the Jan lokpal Bill in the Delhi Assembly because the Congress and the BJP opposed it for the unconstitutional manner in which the AAP sought to table the Bill.
