Sir — This refers to the editorial, “High electoral stakes” (March 7). I do not believe that the outcome of the elections in four States of Assam, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Kerala, and Puducherry, will have a national bearing. These elections will be fought on local issues and on political arithmetic, which will decide the fate of the parties.
The BJP’s poor performance in these crucial five States will give a major boost to the Opposition, to sharpen its attack on the ruling party. Opposition parties, especially the Congress, rather than indulging in constructive politics, look for opportunities to pin down the Modi Government.
