Sir — This refers to the editorial, “It’s a dream come true” (September 19). On his 67th birthday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi gifted the nation with Sardar Sarovar dam on Narmada river, the mega-project considered to be the lifeline of Gujarat.
The dam is supposed to be India’s largest and the world’s second largest after Grand Coulee in the US. It is the centrepiece of the Narmada valley development project that is expected to provide water and energy to Rajasthan, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. There is little doubt that with election for State Assembly slated in Gujarat later this year, this project would bring dividends to the ruling party. Especially, when the United Progressive Alliance, during its ruling, did not give permission for seven years to place gates on this dam.
