Effective deterrence

Sir — Kudos to Delhi’s fast-track court for its milestone verdict in the December 16 gang rape, a rarest of rare case, and for awarding the death penalty to all four convicts. The verdict was long-awaited by the victim’s family and the people who played a major role in compelling leaders to amend the criminal laws. The judgement will, hopefully, mark a new beginning.

Still, there is a long way before punishment is meted out to the guilty as the case will now be heard in the higher courts. Meanwhile, we hope that the verdict will send a strong signal that there will be zero tolerance to sexual assaults on women.
