Dubious NGOs

Published on:

Sir — Siphoning  away Government funds meant for legitimate non-Government organisations, by influential elements in political and bureaucratic circles to benefit organisations they run in the name of family members, is common.

These NGOs pay lucrative salaries and perks to their employees who are closely associated with  politicians and bureaucrats. Buildings that come up on land allotted, at concessional rates, to NGOs should be converted into state property because of the large-scale Government funding they have received.

Funding of NGOs with public money, including from funds at the discretion of MPs and MlAs, should be stopped. Also, NGOs getting foreign-funding should be brought under strict vigilance. Many NGOs are tools to divert foreign funds for various questionable purposes. NGOs should come under the Right to Information Act and in the jurisdiction of the proposed lokpal.
