Dubious acts

Sir — This refers to the report, “Pak backstabs BSF under peace guise” (June 4). It is deeply saddening that we as a nation tend to be facile and over-trusting, particularly in regard to our habitually vicious and slippery neighbour — Pakistan.

Decades of bilateral talks with our supposedly younger brother, after separation in August 1947, for peace and friendly relations, led us nowhere. India fought few wars followed by agreements, like the one in Shimla when it returned thousands of their prisoners of the 1971 conflict. Similarly, our country signed an agreement in 2003 which said that we would not allow our territory to be used for hostile acts against each other. Pakistan merrily forgot these sooner than later.

The latest understanding reached was five days ago between the Director Generals Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan when it was agreed that the ceasefire agreement of 2003 would be followed in “letter and spirit.”

Old habits die hard; within a few days, Pakistani aggressors shelled Indian positions on the international border, causing several casualties. Is it not high time that we learn our lessons vis-a-vis Pakistani duplicity and act in a manner that deters them for all timesIJ
