Don't oppose Sanskrit; promote all languages

Published on:

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has opposed ‘Sanskrit Week' celebrations and asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to promote other languages also. She has urged that a ‘Classical language Week' be organised in each State based on linguistic heritage. Each State or a group of States has its own language. Sanskrit, however, does not belong to any particular State. It is the Devanagari language and is all-pervasive.

If Sanskrit Week is celebrated, it does not mean that other languages should not be celebrated. If the Central Board of Secondary Education wants to organise Sanskrit Week celebrations, nobody should throw a spanner in the works. The field should be left to academicians. There should not be any political interference. Sanskrit is not just a language but it is part of Indian culture. Politicians should not meddle in the affairs of the CBSE, while there should not be any bar to organise other language weeks throughout the States.
