Don't let radicals ruin India-Pakistan peace

This refers to the editorial, “Yet one more attempt” (December 8). India should not let its strategic interests in engaging Pakistan be derailed by jingoistic provocations from extremists forces operating from the latter's territory. A sustained dialogue is necessary for strong bilateral ties.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his counterpart Nawaz Sharif should broaden their outlook and make something substantial of the political space that they have been able to establish after the events in Paris and Bangkok. Building trust through sustained engagement on security issues and having pacts for economic cooperation can provide a more favourable context to address the grievances on both sides.

At the same time, it is important to protect the peacemaking process from acts of terrorism. India should look at exploiting tactical options and protest diplomatically against Pakistan to create strong disincentives for the latter’s hostile actions.
