This refers to the article, “As West recedes, India looks to resurgent East” (August 7) by Gautam Mukherjee. The writer has pointed out some interesting facts. First, he is right that India, which needs huge foreign investment in infrastructure and manufacturing, cannot blindly rely on the US as there has been a shift in power and the East too has achieved prominence. Mr Barack Obama's term is nearing its end, and his priorities will not be to invest big in India; he will be hoping for big-ticket successes in, say, West Asia.
Also, since Japan can contribute significantly to our growth, we must not lose this opportunity. Rather, we must strengthen our ties with Tokyo. Yes, contrary to expectations, the Narendra Modi Government has been going slow on major reforms. Rather, it is going slow and steady to first restore market confidence, which is a wise move. Mr Modi must not take a bagful of expectations when he visits the US.
