Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Politics of language” (March 18). It rightly points out the practical aspects pertaining to the necessity of fluency in the English language for those aspiring to be civil servants. A working knowledge of other Indian and even foreign languages is an added advantage. Not only does this enhance the understanding of various cultures, it also helps sharpen communication skills. This is a must in view of the cross-country postings of civil servants.
