If reports are to be believed, the Election Commission of India could ban opinion polls. But that would not be the correct step. The poll panel should regulate opinion polls so that the methodology, sample size and other factors are weighed in appropriately and the entire exercise is transparent and put in public domain.
The Congress wants a ban on opinion surveys because it is seen as losing. The common man has been hit by inflation, corruption and deteriorating law and order situation. No one seems to be afraid of the law as its implementation is poor on all major fronts. Opinion polls are in fact a justified right of the media that reflects the mood of the masses.
But it is also a fact that many of these surveys do not always present a true picture as they are based on poor sample considerations. Moreover, they can affect poll results as voters who are undecided can get carried away by the findings.
