Sir — This refers to the article, “Toll taken by identity politics” (July 5) by Prafull Goradia. On the face of it, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen chief Asaduddin Owaisi’s statement seems to be flowing from his chagrin over a spate of incidents of ‘mob violence’ in several States wherein a number of members from the miniority communities and the Dalits have lost their lives following the lynching, vigilantism and moral policing.
His tall claims of a ‘better law and order’ situation have fallen flat as he earned the displeasure of the Supreme Court in this regard.
However, the parliamentarian’s alleged call to the Muslims to vote along religious lines is not going to cut much ice with the community. Owaisi is otherwise a practical Muslim leader who has many a time endorsed the Government’s policy on holistic develoment of the people.
Recently, he took to task all those trolling his Parliamentary colleague and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on social media. Instead, he is expected to advise the community to lend their support to only those political parties that having sincere solicitude for the minorities’ betterment i the elections to come.
