This refers to the article, “An absence of road discipline” (July 14) by Kushan Mitra. A majority of road accidents and road-rage crimes occur because people are in a hurry or they have frayed tempers or scant regard for the law. Many people, especially the youth, brazenly violate traffic rules because of their social influence and money-power, though they have been issued challans several times. They not only hurt themselves, but also endanger the lives of other people.
It is sad that neither the vehicle riders nor the pedestrians are inclined to follow the rules and regulations. The authorities concerned also ignore many ‘minor' lapses and irregularities, which often results later into major accidents and tragedies.
Unless we develop a good habit and disciplined life of our own accord, society cannot expect any positive change. The rate of accidents will keep on soaring.
