Sir — This refers to reports that former Tamil Nadu Chief J Jayalalithaa has extended financial aid to kin of 193 suicide victims. The suicides came in the wake of Jayalalithaa’s conviction and incarceration in a Bangalore jail. The developments in the State are shocking and unbelievable. It seems Tamil Nadu will continue to create world records in such strange and repulsive acts.
But what is equally disturbing is that, after seeing the sympathy wave and emotional reaction of the people, even Jayalalithaa’s arch rivals are constrained to adopt a hypocritical attitude and issue amusing statements. DMK supremo M Karunanidhi stated that he neither rejoiced over her being jailed nor regretted her securing bail, whereas the truth is just the opposite. Similarly, Tamil superstar Rajanikanth has also said that he is “glad” over the release of Jayalalithaa on bail, though he actually does not have any soft corner for her. No leader or a public personality in Tamil Nadu dares to say anything against her.
