Dirty habits

It is nice to note that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s pet project, the Swachch Bharat Abhiyan, is being pursued in all earnestness by the BJP-led Government at the Centre with directives going to all the State administrations that the initiative should gain momentum, and with efforts by their gubernatorial appointees and party functionaries to ensure that the objective of maintaining overall cleanliness in the country is achieved to satisfactory levels. But alas, apart from colour photographs of immaculately dressed dignitaries wielding brooms and sweeping the streets clean, adorning the pages of the dailies, the campaign has refused to pick up, even in BJP-ruled States. Whatever publicity the drive has gained has been primarily due to the  novelty of Mr Modi’s venture.
How can such symbolic gestures of keeping our premises clean, inspire the members of the public to mend their waysIJ Presumably this is not a subject close to our hearts, considering the disdain Indians have shown in keeping their surroundings clean. Maintaining cleanliness of our neighbourhood is an aspect of life that needs to be inculcated at a very early age. Habituated to a way of life where discarding refuse in a careless and irresponsible manner, we have dirty habits come naturally to us.
