Diminishing ties

Published on:

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Nepal’s brinkmanship” (May 10). Nepal’s Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli is so unsure about the survival of his brief regime that he has put governance on hold. However, he has just managed to save his Government from a threat by the Maoists to withdraw their support to it. Probably Nepal’s Maoists, who are anyway untrustworthy partners, are biding their time to take over the Government.

That said, the ruling regime in Kathmandu is convinced that India wanted to destabilise the Government to exact revenge for Nepal’s dalliance with China and its failure to address the demands of the Madhesi population.

The downward trajectory of India-Nepal ties in the past year should be a cause for concern for both countries. This has made Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s carefully cultivated Nepal yatra a distant memory.
