Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Captain Cool’s legacy (January 1). MS Dhoni’s retirement from Test cricket has created a big vacuum in Indian cricket. His contribution remains significant and laudable. As a batsman, wicket-keeper and captain, he combined the three roles admirably.
Mr Dhoni’s performance as a Test captain is a study in contrasts. While he was extremely successful in leading the Indian team in Test matches played in India, his overseas captaincy record was extremely dismal. All the same, he never shirked away from his captaincy duties, and that allowed the liekes of Sachin Tendulkar, Rahul Dravid and VVS laxman to play their natural game. This was his most striking contribution to Indian cricket.
