This refers to the article, “Netas have to first fight graft on their home turf” (April 19) by Hiranmay Karlekar. There is no substitute for dharma to enforce moral values. The Government should stay out of this unless it becomes absolutely necessary to intervene. Mahatma Gandhi wrote very strongly to advocate that the then new state of India should be based on dharma (as opposed to religion). It is unfortunate that his followers have used him to making their political fortunes and discarded his plea thereafter.
If our leaders had accepted Mahatma Gandhi's idea and set an example, India would have been a very different country. The only exception is his ideas on foreign policy and defence, where perhaps Veer Savarkar was more in the right. Even now, it is not too late to introduce a course on dharma in our educational institutions. It will lead to a betterment of the people of the country.
