Deserving right

Sir — The Supreme Court’s decision to give voters the right to reject candidates is a laudable one, coming on the heels of another landmark verdict which disqualifies convicted lawmakers. The right to reject will help in cleansing the political system. It will also raise the acceptability levels of candidates and compel elected leaders to deliver results in a time-bound manner.

Similarly, the apex court’s verdict will result in an increased turnout of voters, as those who prefer to remain at home rather than vote for a corrupt or criminal candidate, will come to the polling booths to exercise the ‘none of the above’ option. The political system has become so corrupt that the judiciary has to come forward to help the citizens.
