Delayed execution

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “ Bold, welcome verdict” (May 6). Indeed, the apex court has given a historic verdict. The Nirbhaya episode was one of the rarest, which saw the entire country united. Off course, Nirbhaya’s parents can now take a sigh of relief after the apex court’s judgement. Their five year ordeal will come to an end.

Most importantly, this judgement will set the right example and repose people’s faith in the judiciary. Though the juvenile, who was equally involved in this rape case, got away with minimal punishment, but it is commendable that this case forced our Government to amend the juvenile justice Bill. This will now ensure that juveniles, who are involved in heinous crime like these, get similar punishment as that of adults.

It is also time that the Rs 1,000-crore Nirbhaya fund is utilised effectively for the betterment of safety of women in our society. There is a lot that needs to be done still. But one thing we must not forget is the fact that this execution will not take place immediately.
