Deft use of diplomacy got our fishermen released

This refers to the report, “NaMo's bold move proves boon for 300 fishers jailed in Pak, Sri lanka” (May 26). The very first step taken by Mr Narendra Modi, by inviting all the SAARC leaders, including  Pakistan's Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and Sri lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa, for the swearing-in ceremony, evoked a warm and positive response from the Governments in Islamabad and Colombo. Mr Modi is trying to create cordial relations with neighbouring countries.

At the same time, it is disappointing that Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa and certain political parties were against the visit of the Sri lankan President to India. Their undesirable protest could strain ties between the two nations. These leaders ought to realise that whatever that has already happened cannot be changed by keeping animosity with Sri lanka, whereas a positive approach, like the one taken by Mr. Modi, can bring the nations closer and create a better atmosphere for the Tamils in Sri lanka.
