Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Outlaw these laws” (September 15). The reservations expressed about the obsolete laws causing loss to the society as well as the judiciary in terms of time and money, are on the mark. laws are made for the people’s facilitation, taking into consideration the need to address some rampant problems faced by them in day-to-day, life but their misuse helps to harass them instead.
In my school book, I had read a lesson titled, ‘The lady with the dog’, wherein a bus conductor took exception to a lady carrying her pet puppy and put all other passengers to harassment, on the pretext that the rule did not permit the bringing of pets on the bus. A senior citizen prevailed on the conductor to get going after convincing him that laws are made for providing facilities to people. In a similar context, as per a media report, a warrant was issued a few days back against a one-year-old on the charge of breaching peace!
It augurs well that the Union Government is in agreement with the law Commission of India’s recommendation to repeal scores of old-fashioned laws, and is serious about the abrogation of all such obsolete laws that not only stand in the way of governance and fast-tracked administration of justice but also add to the burden of the judicial system, already creaking under the weight of litigations
