Darkest hour of Indian democracy

Published on:

This refers to the article, “The Emergency: Heroes and villains” (June 19) by A Surya Prakash. Thanks for the reminder. This reminds us of the era of slavary of Independent India.

A new generation has come up since the dreadful days of “Emergency” and this new generation — almost 40 to 50 per cent of the population, has no idea of how frightful the 1975 Emergency period was and how close India had come to the precipice for falling into ‘dictatorship’ that could have lasted for decades.

The time has come to uncover the tales of heroes, who struggled to raise the sun of Independence again on the horizon of India; the tales which are untold but must be told to every Indian patriot.

Incredibly, nothing has changed in the Congress. It is a fiefdom in which even the senior members dare not criticise the confused and often incoherent president of the party, Rahul Gandhi.

If the results of recent Karnataka elections are any indicators, India can still slide back to those hopeless times. God forbid.
