Sir — This refers to the article, “A Japanese blunder in the offing” (September 18) by Avik Roy.
The secrecy that shrouds the civil nuclear industry in India makes it almost impossible for citizens to know accurately the details of accidents that have occurred. The costs paid by Indian citizens, through both health and environment, seem to be far greater than the meagre 2.7 per cent of electricity currently provided by the civil nuclear sector. The frequency and similarity of accidents are disturbing. It discredits the Department of Atomic Energy and the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board.
