Opening up a fresh political warfare, BJP leader Subramanian Swamy has now targeted Reserve Bank of India Governor Raghuram Rajan. He has created a flutter in the Government, business and his own party circles, by demanding that Rajan, whose term ends in September this year, be sent packing to Chicago. Swamy is known to have held this view for a long time and had, in fact, advised the Prime Minister to make R Vaidyanathan, professor of finance at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore, as the Governor.

For all purposes, Swamy has emerged as the provocateur in the ruling dispensation. Two years ago, the people of India were promised a different a purposeful essay in governance. Now that the Modi Government has come under Swamy’s shadow, its priorities stand in danger of getting distorted.
