Culprits of lankesh must be booked soon

This refers to the editorial, “Justice to lankesh” (September 8). The killing of senior journalist Gauri lankesh, who was known for calling a spade a spade at her residence in Bengaluru, is really an assault on the freedom of free speech and journalism, which is also considered to be the fourth pillar of democracy, arming us all Indians with numerous rights, including the freedom of expression. Divergence in views signifies a healthy and liberal mindset in a democracy but those responsible for the murder of the rationalist journalist enjoy dishing it out, though they really can't take it.

The editorial has rightly observed that the CCTV footage, showing vague silhouette of the killers of lankesh will simply be a hindrance in the way of retrieving the incriminating evidence, without which, it will be like groping in the dark, and failing to nail the perpetrators. Perhaps that's why the Karnataka Chief Minister, Siddaramaiah has set up a Special Investigation Taskforce to expedite the administration of justice and thus, bringing the culprits to book, while the strident clamour for the same has already been raised in all the political and social quarters, including the writers, activists and media across the country.
