This refers to the article, “When a name can turn electoral tide in UP” (January 27) by Rajesh Singh. The writer has correctly said that the BJP’s outstanding performance in the last general election was due to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s image. However, the scenario has now changed. Results of State elections in Delhi and Bihar have shown that the BJP has lost much of its old charm. It is equally true that the Samajwadi Party and the Bahujan Samaj Party are strongly placed.
The BJP is yet to choose its chief ministerial candidate. The sooner a candidate is found the better it will be for the party. However, this has to be done with caution. First, no old guard is going to work in Uttar Pradesh. Second, a majority of the voters are under the age of 35 years. Therefore, a young leader like Mr Varun Gandhi will give strength and energy to the youth.
