Crisis well-managed

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Aftermath of the crisis” (October 14). The Union Government and the Governments of Odisha and Andhra Pradesh deserve a huge round of applause for their indefatigable efforts in containing the damage from cyclone Hudhud. The ferocity of Hudhud had the potential to spread havoc in even the developed countries that are better prepared in disaster management. India has in recent times efficiently managed to cope with such cyclonic catastrophes. In the past years, the cyclones took a heavy toll on both life and property, and with India’s inability to brace through the cyclonic episodes of destruction, the situation just exacerbated.

The authorities have taken cognizance of the adversity and set up multiple weather-monitoring systems in collaboration with the Indian Meteorological Department. Satellite images provide the weather scientists with a humongous clutter of data and information about cloud formation and weather patterns, hence making the prognostication system more accurate and effective.
