Cricket woes

Published on:

Sir — By now, hopefully, the media and the public alike would have got over their distaste for saying anything good about the Indian cricket team, after its disastrous Test series against England. For, as the members of the Press well know, dissecting sporting fortunes of the nation has never been a viable subject to hold public attention for more than a day or two.

Besides, public memory is so short that in no time at all, will this same team that has performed so  badly, be placed on a high pedestal for some other cricketing exploit.

It amazes one that after Kapil Dev, the country is still to produce a pace bowler of substance. But then the ‘Haryana hurricane’ could never be called a product of the system but a player who stormed into the team purely on the strength of his cricketing capabilities. If the cricketing camps organised across the country are unable to spot and nurture talent, then the murky politics that drives the working of the various State cricket associations is to blamed.
