Cricket is shamed

Published on:
Sir — This refers to the news report, “Underworld link in IPl spot-fixing” (May 17).
Cricket, once known as a ‘gentleman’s game’, is now administered and dominated by some unscrupulous elements. From the beginning the IPl has been riddled with controversies, including financial irregularities, but the authorities responsible for acting against the culprits , themselves have conflicts of interest. Thus, the scams have continued unabated.
The game, which earlier witnessed only ‘on-field’ high jinks, has now become notorious for ‘off-field’ scams involving drugs, women et al. The latest expose of spot-fixing will also fade from public memory, like previous aberrations, unless the spectators/viewers boycott the game. This will be in the larger interest of cricket.
