Credentials lacking

Published on:

Sir — It may be argued that a degree is not all that important; after all, we have had success stories of non-graduates like Steve Jobs, Bill Gates, Dhirubhai Ambani etc.

But as an agent of change, the Narendra Modi-led Government should have prioritised education in its governance agenda. In fact, the systematic slighting of the social sector, particularly health and education, has skewed India’s development paradigm. Consider in this context the judicious appointment of Mr Harsh Vardhan as the Union Minister for Health. The pertinent question is: Does Ms Smriti Irani have the adequate credentials to be the country’s HRD MinisterIJ

Her appointment in this ministry does not signal hope in the direction of revamping our educational system for the better or promoting strategies for the development of higher educational institutions — something which Prime Minister Narendra Modi is extremely keen to do. Ms Najma Heptullah would have been a better choice as the HRD Minister.
