Congress has stalwarts to match the BJP

This refers to the news report, “Namo Narendra, chants BJP in unison” (June 10). That Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi would head the BJP poll campaign en route to a probable NDA Government at the Centre was never in doubt after the Gujarat Assembly result. The process could have been less acrimonious. But then the party had been battling internal rifts for a long time now, and it seems that the Karnataka fiasco forced the BJP to fast-track the Modi anointment.

The party’s hardliners could have been more patient. Mr Modi's elevation has certainly raised the pitch of the 2014 ballot fest. With every party tainted in varying degrees, the old brew of corruption and politically inspired violence is no more a deciding factor. The Congress would do well to find from within its bench strength to match Mr Modi. It can certainly boast of men who have greater experience, coupled with an erudite and forceful tongue. As regards other parties, big and small, they will always place their bets on a credible winner. Their party manifestos come in an extremely accommodating briefcase.
