Competent leader

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Modern-day Fadnavis” (October 31). Mr Devendra Fadnavis’s simple and honest ways should hold him in good stead as he prepares himself for the tough task of ruling a large State at a relatively young age. Given the fact that he had a humble beginning, and rose through the ranks by sheer hard work, he should be able to effectively tackle the badly hit administration. It is good to hear that the new Chief Minister has promised to the people that he will deliver on what Prime Minister Narendra Modi promised during the campaign. It is important for Mr Fadnavis, at least for the time being, to keep some key portfolios with him to re-shape crucial departments.

As the editorial has rightly said, the lack of big-time experience means the new Chief Minister comes without any baggage. This very fact can propel Mr Fadnavis to take some bold decisions in a State pushed to non-governance under the Congress-NCP rule.

The ever smiling, but straight-forward Mr Fadnavis has the onerous responsibility of taking his party seniors in Maharashtra and the Centre as well as the Shiv Sena along with him through testing times. In the process, a slew of contentious issues, including that of a separate Vidarbha State, and the plight of the farmers, will demand Mr Fadnavis’s prompt attention.
