The meaning of ‘swachch' denotes purity of mind, cleanliness of body and environment, and holistic action. We would be able to optimise our living standards in a healthy environment. Mr Arvind Kejriwal and his team, on the eve of the Delhi Assembly election, had said that their top priority would be to keep the city clean and green. After Mr Kejriwal became the Chief Minister, probably due to other pre-occupations, he has forgotten about sanitary conditions in the city. Mosquitoes have fanned out like speeches and dengue has spread like wildfire.
With the three elements of swachch missing in the top echelons of the country and its people, the preaching of Swachch Bharat will be no more than hype. Our politicians should develop a clean conscience and become guides and philosophers of the people who vote them to power. October 2 is Mahatma Gandhi's birth anniversary. Mere oath-taking is of no use; words should be put into action that is visible.
