Clean Ganga

Published on:

Sir — The Supreme Court has said that Union Government’s Ganga clean-up action plan will not help clean the holy river even after 200 years. The criticism is understandable. Since the Ganga Action Plan was launched in 1985, successive Governments have tried and failed to restore the river to its pristine glory.

Cleaning the Ganga is not a judicial project. It is highly technical, engineering-based job. Does the court have the expertise to decide on what a good action plan should look likeIJ Can the court stop corporates from polluting the holy river with industrial wasteIJ Can it stop the faithful from pouring the ashes of the dead and waste from religious ceremonies into the riverIJ
