China, finally fighting against terrorism

This refers to the editorial, “Assertive yet adjusting” (September 6).  It was said that Chinese President Xi Jinping didn’t want Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to raise the issue of terror in the Xiamen Brics (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) summit, which might have repercussions for China’s all-weather friend Pakistan. Beijing is well-known for its support to Pakistan — a country that patronises various terrorist groups, including those perpetrating terror attacks in India, which is strategically aimed at troubling India.

It is a big success for Prime Minister Modi that the Xiamen Brics summit took up the issue of terror jointly condemning terrorism in all its form for the first time. Many terrorist organisations were named, including two Pakistan-based terrorist groups, lashkar-e-Tayyeba and Jaish-e-Mohammed, expressing ‘concern’ on the security situation in the region and violence caused by these outfits. China has used its veto power many a times in the past to block India’s move at the United Nations Security Council for designating Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar as a global terrorist. Now, being one of the declarant of the Xiamen move against terrorism, it may not be easy for China to do so the next time.
