Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Delhi’s poisoned chalice” (November 8). What is true for Delhi is also true for other cities in the country. The capital city’s problem is, however, complicated because of a multitude of factors. The Government is helpless solutions are either cosmetic or absolutely ineffective so far. Time and again, any hard decisions taken by the Government, to curb pollution, have been met with opposition, irrespective of their merits.
The issue of air quality in our cities requires a systemic response. Unrestrained population growth, unchecked urbanisation with attendant traffic chaos, a high decibel noise, decimated greenery, greed for personal comforts by large sections of the well-off population, unchecked use of carbon producing fuels are some of the causes at the root of the disease. An integrated solution could be found only if all stakeholders come on a platform to address the problem at war footing.
