Brutal attack

Sir — This refers to the article, “lessons from the Orlando attack” (June 16) by Hiranmay Karlekar. It is still unclear as to what propelled Omar Mateen, a US citizen of Afghan descent, to mow down 50 people at the nighclub. Perhaps he had chosen the time and occasion for the assault carefully to inflict maximum collateral damage.

However, this massacre will inevitably impact the US presidential elections. One shouldn’t be surprised if this tragedy is used by Islamophobes to make things more difficult for Muslims and other Asian immigrants living in the Western world.
