Bollywood success

Sir — This refers to the editorial, “Take a bow, Bollywood!” (October 16). The new trend of ‘small-budget’, ‘quirky’ and ‘real’ cinema that exemplifies the lives of ordinary Indians on the big screen is gaining traction as demonstrated by the success of films like Iqbal, Vicky Donor, Queen Newton and more. Moving away from the quintessential larger-than-life experience to a renewed portrayal of reality, as lived in the everyday slums, towns and middle class homes with an emphasis on young dreams, Bollywood has indeed come a long way.

Fresh concepts, coupled with experimental story-telling and young actors and directors has injected much-needed enthusiasm and honesty in the cinematic experience. One hopes more gender-based, inspiring and meaningful films will be made in the future, thereby projecting the new India on the wider canvas for the world to witness and celebrate.
