Sir— This refers to the editorial, “Cricket as mood-setter” (June 20). “Serious sport is war minus the shooting” — is the famous quote of George Orwell, an India born British author. Michael Moore-Jones, a New Zealander student said, “Serious sport has nothing to do with fair play. It is bound-up with hatred, jealousy, boastfulness, disregard of all rules and sadistic pleasure in witnessing violence, in other words it is war minus the shooting.”

India’s capitulation before arch rival Pakistan in the ICC Champions Trophy pains us. But the editorial has rightly said that nobody is praising the hockey team, which trounced Pakistan 7-1 in the semi-final on the very same day; also, Kidambi Srikanth won the Indonesia Open Super Series final.
