This refers to the editorial, “Tactical master stroke” (March 19). That Bharatiya Janata Party's prime ministerial nominee Narendra Modi would fight the election from Uttar Pradesh was widely expected.
The only suspense was over the constituency. The choice was between Varanasi and lucknow. Now that he has been asked to contest from Varanasi, it is obviously a wise move by the party. Mr Modi has moved from the land of Somnath to that of Vishwanath.
He belongs not only to Gujarat but all of the country. To reach the 272-mark in the lok Sabha, the BJP has to do well in the State and win as many seats as it can out of the 80 on offer. I agree that Mr Modi's contesting from Varanasi will have a cascading effect on neighbouring Bihar, where the BJP is poised to do well. As far as Aam Aadmi Party leader Arvind Kejriwal is concerned, if he contests against Mr Modi, he will lose his deposit.
