BJP must rejoice, but it still has a long way to go

This refers to the article, “The Right gets it right” (December 9) by Rajesh Singh. Though the Hindi heartland has been a BJP stronghold, the way the party has decimated the Congress in Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, managed to win Chhattisgarh and emerge as the single largest entity in Delhi, sends out the strong message that the mood across the country is one of strong anti-Congressism.

Yes, there is the Narendra Modi factor which has worked, but the victories are not due to Mr Modi alone. Now, with this strong showing, the BJP will be all the more aggressive in the ongoing session of Parliament.

But there is still a lot of ground that the BJP has to cover to capture New Delhi. It has to improve hugely in States like Uttar Pradesh and southern and north-eastern India, where it has a negligible presence. Without success there, the 272-mark will be difficult to achieve. The BJP must strengthen its groundwork and focus on the grassroots.
