Until a few weeks ago even the worst critics of Mr Narendra Modi in politics and the media in media were reconciled to concede the Modi-wave sweeping the election scenario across the country. Sensible electioneering in the Modi camp should have capitalised on the mood, with leaders speaking more about the economic agenda, unemployment, national security etc. Sadly, what we are witnessing is a competitive new low in name calling. It is true that provocation need replies, but to take it all to the extreme at the personal level will only harm the prospects of the formation of a BJP-led NDA Government at the Centre.
The BJP must not foreclose post-election options with regard to regional parties by unduly criticising regional leaders who have a strong base in their States. The BJP is getting dangerously close to over-confidence, with some of its prominent leader shooting their mouths off. There is need for caution, or a certain victory can turn sour in the coming weeks.
