The Government has done well to confer the Bharat Ratna on eminent scientist CNR Rao. Mr Rao's contribution has been recognised globally by scientific academies, for which he has also been honoured with several international awards. He left a promising career in the US to return to India and serve his nation. The Bharat Ratna is not only a recognition of his scientific excellence but also a most fitting tribute to the entire science and technology community of India.
The country has done well in this field despite being shackled by the paucity of funds. India’s space programme is of international standards, which is demonstrated by the Indian Space Research Organisation's many successes. However, if the Government is serious about enhancing the spread of science and technology in the country, it must heed Mr Rao's words and give more funds to research and development. This will enthuse our brilliant professionals to work better.
