Better oversight

Sir — Generations of Indians have eaten Maggi noodles. The reported discovery of impermissibly high levels of lead and the presence of Mono Sodium Glutamate other harmful ingredients in Maggi noodles is adequate reason to put all packaged food products under the scanner. We just wonder how long has the adulteration been going on. Surely, it raises questions about India’s food safety regime. This is bound to worry parents since the branded noodles are popular among children.

While the negative reports, though disputed by the manufacturer, have cost the company dearly in financial terms, its image too has been tarnished. And, should celebrities be hauled up for endorsing products whose quality they may not be aware ofIJ Should the publishers/ broadcasters of advertisements selling defective products be also proceeded againstIJ

The Maggi revelations clearly show that companies cannot be trusted with a self-regulatory system. The onus is on the Government.
