Better late than never

Sir — This refers to the news report, “Namo Narendra, chants BJP in unison” (June 10).

At long last and after much dithering and confusion, what was largely anticipated by the BJP cadre and the public and feared by veteran leader lK Advani, the inevitable has happened. Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi has been handed a national role. Mr Modi’s elevation as the head of BJP’s Election Campaign Committee is welcome news. It has not just enthused the cadre and supporters alike, but has also given momentum and direction to the party’s preparation for the 2014 battle.

But, it is a matter of concern that this ‘simple matter’ of Mr Modi’s elevation should have troubled the party to great extents in recent times, even leading to resentment and heartburn among some senior leaders, including Mr Advani and his group. This may affect the party adversely, especially if it fails to project a united front and exploit the present disenchantment and anger of the people against the corrupt and inefficient Congress-led UPA regime.
