Sir — This refers to the editorial, “One titanic controversy” (June 5). It’s implausible to believe that a gentleman of Anil Kumble’s stature would have disrespected the ethos of the Indian team, or engaged in a verbal spat with captain Virat Kohli. Equally, it is unimaginable that Kohli would have questioned the credentials or temperament of the coach. Any difference in perspective, attitude or approach between the captain and the coach is healthy, so long as both are on the same page as far as team goals are concerned.
Needless to say, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) could have handled this better, rather than having let rumours affect team spirit or relationship between the individuals in question. Whether or not Kumble is retained as coach, the BCCI must practice basic courtesy in its dealings with team officials, and chase excellence while overriding other considerations in its selection process — be it for support staff or playing eleven.
