This refers to the editorial, “Trim the censor board” (February 28). Some of the reasons given by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) for disallowing the screening of lipstick Under My Burkha — of being sexually explicit and lady-oriented, containing audio pornography, sexual perversion and abusive words — lack clear definitions. The larger issue is whether the CBFC chief is taking the audience's ‘immaturity’ for granted.
What happened to some scenes in the James Bond film, Spectre, and Udta Punjab, needs no reiteration. The intent of the film and the message it wants to send to the masses through the story, are far more important than how the film is depicted on the screen. Women have fantasies too. The Shyam Benegal committee has recommended that the CBFC should only be a certification body for films. The panel’s recommendations must see the light of day soon. Else, we will continue to have more of these controversies erupting all the time.
